It was early dawn, and still rather chilly out. The sun was just still peeping over the distant mountain crests, of which could be easily seen from the ledge that the Canyon Pack den site sat on. Avikii sat there, overlooking his vast sloping territory. He had woken up early that morning, patrolled the eastern border, and caught a scrawny hare; which was fortunate due to the downing weather. The lean alpha now found himself simply relaxing, taking in the views that this valley offered. Although, some deep thoughts brewed within him, ones he wished weren't true.
Ever since the pups, and even possibly before, him and Kaiser had been distant, his own mate. I adore her, but things just weren't the same as they had been back in the summer. He broke his thoughts, looking at his paws and breathing a sigh. I have to say something... Right? He thought, looking back up at the beaming sun, it's warmth only just now starting to warm the air.
Avikii had even begun to notice that Kaiser had been admiring a new wolf, and one of his close friends. Lightning. He was a pretty observant wolf, and often noticed her glancing at the beta, sharing food, or hunting or patrolling together. Avikii huffed out another sigh, which was pretty stupid really. He wasn't really the one to have a mate, he had always desired one, and was overjoyed when Kaiser and him began. The dark coated male glanced behind him, light paw steps drumming rhythmically behind him, and that familiar sweet scent drifted over his nose.

Kaiser trotted into the camp, carrying a smalll, scrawny hair clamped tightly in her jaws as she looked around the camp site. She dropped the hair into the pile, looking up and spotting Avikii as a small smile formed onto her face. She padded up the rocks, taking a seat next to him. " Hello." She said, her eyes shining a bit.

Avikii stiffened, gulping down the lump that had formed in his throat. This is going to be hard, he thought, turning to face Kaiser with a warm smile, yet not the same one he had offered in those months past. "Kaiser..." He began, avoiding her pale gold optics, duly noting the glimmer to them. He sighed, glancing around. Too many listening ears. "Come, take a walk with me around the territory." Was all he blurted out, followed by standing up.
He brushed past her lightly, making his way over to the entrance of their den site, which provided the easiest way down the sloping hill.

" U-uh, ok..." she said, slightly confused as she furrowed her eyebrows a bit standing up and padding next to him as she looked around again. " So, what are we taking a walk for?" She asked, tilting her head to the side, utterly clueless as to what was about to happen.

Avikii lead her through the aspen forest, of which was mingled with spruce and douglas fir. Dead leaves littered the ground, they crunched under the alpha's large paws, leaving little trace of where he had gone. Finally, he turned to Kaiser, coming to a stop as he did so. He took a breath, why were those words so hard to just spit out? He thought, holding her gaze. "Kaiser, I don't think... We can be together any longer." He said with an almost unnoticeable sigh.
Seconds plodded by, each separated from the next by an eternity. Air grew heavy, damp, almost solid. He felt as if he were breathing boulders. Well, he finally said it, Avikii had expected it to hurt, but not this much.

Kaiser followed him through the forest, the leaves crunching under her paws as she trotted next to him casually. She trotted a bit further, not noticing her stopped before quickly walking back over to him. She was about to say something before hearing him, her mouth still remaining parted open slightly as she looked down. " O-oh..." she said quietly, now realizing why they were out here.

Avikii pinned his ears, but kept a strong gaze aimed at her. "I've seen you with Lightning." He told her, making sure she knew. "It's okay, we've always been distant..." He began, but soon trailed off. His heart wrenched, even though he had planned to bring this up. But now, now that they were here, it hurt, it truly did. Of course though, it had to be said.
What about the pups? He thought, they would soon be the age of subordinates, of course they would be old enough to understand. He just hoped that none of them would hate him, or their mother.

She nods a bit. He wasn't wrong, they had been growing distant. She looked up at him, looking at his eyes. " I'm still gonna be your close friend, wether your like it or not." She said stubbornly. If they couldn't be mates anymore, then close friends would have to suffice. She smiled somewhat sadly as she tried to hide it, but sighed slightly.

Avikii nodded, another small sad smile inching its way across his muzzle. "I'm alright with that, I mean, as long as you're still around." He replied softly, soon followed by glancing at his paws.
Looking back up, the alpha made eye contact with her for a brief moment before turning his head to face where the den site was located just a few fox lengths away. "Should we get back to the den site? Lightning may be wondering where you are..." He added, reminding her what he had seen.

Avikii rested his expression, slightly glad to hear that they could remain as close friends. He licked her cheek lightly in a friendly manner before turning in the direction of the den site. "Let's go." He said, and began to make his way back to the site, slowly prowling up the slope.
